Too many Montrealers packing their bags thanks to Bill 14

Posted By: Barry Morgan · 3/12/2013 9:25:00 PM

To my mind, even if a single Montrealer decides to leave this province because of the threat of Bill 14, that's one too many.

Tonight, I spoke with Jimmy Kay of the Unity Group that helped organize an anti-Bill 14 rally in Montreal last month. And I asked Jimmy if he has any plans to move.

I also opened the phones where listeners weighed in. And it was unfortunate, to say the least, to hear what some of the callers had to say.

I cannot believe OTTAWA, sit's and does nothing to help. tourist season is finished in montreal, I believe every dog as her day. I could see the history book's now, 1st women premier of Canada, and the laughing stock to the world..

Thanks for highlighting the work and momentum that has started! I full-heartedly agree in strength in numbers and I encourage everyone inside and outside of Quebec to get informed, involved and use their right to do so!

At issue for me, when I speak to my peers by asking do you know about the proposed Bill 14? How do you think it will affect you etc.? ... is that I hear the voice of apathy.

Preventative action isn't sexy in this day and age. if the Bill is passed, we will never know the real taste of freedom and opportunity that could have been if more people were involved in preventing it to pass.

It is only once human rights abuses happen, wars are started, or cancer invades ones body that we as a society then react ...

This said, I remain optimistic and engaged. I am especially inspired by the work of the communities and groups involved.

See you all on the bus!

English people use the cover of "rights" and try really hard to include elements of universality (french, english, allophones, etc.) but the truth is that you just want to have Montréal look like your "canadian ideal" meaning you can live in english totally and do not have to "bow down" to learn or speak french at all because in the ROC it is like that and you would feel "at home".

Well the problem is that your objectives are in contradiction to the needs of the Québec nation to include it's immigrants into itself to preserve it's language and not be folklorized or marginalized.

The truth is that you will always be a minority in Québec and you have so many other provinces in which you are the majority that you can go to make you feel "at home" while here in Québec it is the only french province so french people have nowhere to go and will defend their "last and only" province to the end.

Migrations are a natural part of life and you will always have people leaving because defending your "survival over here" is always less motivating then defending our "only survival".

So don't put it like it's a bad thing for people to move if they want to be happier elsewhere. Confronting just for the sake of confronting is inspired and leads to the worst colonialist atrocicites in the world and the british empire has many examples where a colonialist minority inflicted hell into a colonized population.

@Le Québécois This has got to be the sillyest comment, Ive ever read...
Rights are not a 'cover', rights HAVE been taken. An example, francophones no longer have the right to attend english schools. If you fail to understand that, you're silly!
Also, the truth is, that the 'objectives of the (so called) quebecois nation' are the reason this PROVINCE is not as prosperous as it once was.
600 000 people have left since the 70s, which would probably have been 2 million people today. Hum, I wonder what influence that has had...
Another truth, that seems to evade the minds of the nationalists, is that English is part of the culture of this province. If you don't realize this, take a look at the flag of Montreal and ask yourself what those 4 flowers are...
It will take more then some silly law that was legislated to change the soul of the province of Quebec, and the anglophones will fight to the end also!
It's funny how the attrocities of the french empire are never mentioned...and how the French had a revolution against the French monarchy, and then we went and put the fleur de lys (a symbol of the French monarchy) on our flag....
      tsk tsk

As a family I'm moving.. Born here because of my ancestors and can't wait to leave.. Too too much crap..The houses are going to be depreciating and the young ones won't be able to afford the cost of living... This place is so corrupt that it is better to leave before it becomes a ghost town..

It's a sad state of affairs, but I like many of my peers , and close friends are thinking to get the hell out. This language nonsense has been going on forever , and it will never go.away. I have a young family and with all the languages they speak ( 3) and no matter how well, they will never get a descent shot at any future here in this province. I like many born and raised here, It's not an easy decision to make, but the more this garbage continues the easier it's becoming. The PQ should be very proud of themselves they will go down in history as , . ignorant racist pigs.
