Guns saved his life

Posted By: Barry Morgan · 3/13/2013 10:03:00 PM

Kevin is a 36 year old Montreal-area resident who believes he would not have made it this far without guns in his life.

It's not because he had to protect himself against an intruder or any such circumstance. But Kevin says it's because, as a teenager living in a rural area, the choice for many youngsters was drugs and alcohol, or working at the local shooting club.

Kevin chose the shooting club and he's convinced that decision as a teenager literally saved his life when some of his friends died because of drugs and/or alcohol.

As you might expect, Kevin is no fan of a gun registry. We certainly didn't see eye to eye on that front.

But it was very interesting to hear what a self-described 'Average Joe' feels and thinks about being a gun owner these days, when so much attention is being focused on the issue of gun laws.

Kevin is totally right when he mentions that a better job should be done at the licensing step, instead of suggesting another useless registry.

What people like Barry and pro-registry activists don't understand is that once firearms get into the hands of persons with bad intentions, it's already too late. And same is true for persons with suicidal intentions. Be the guns registered or not. That's the proof that a registry saves no lives at all.

Take for granted that FAL holders have no criminal record, except for a few famous cases (Bain, Gill and Lépine, for instance). But the FAL (Firearms acquisition license) is still the best tool the authorities can rely on to prevent suicide and a few psycho cases, given that the Governement provides the Sûreté du Québec with sufficient money and staff in order to conduct adequate investigations before issuing an FAL. With sufficient staff, state-of-the-Art investigations would certainly have had caught Bain, Gill and Lépine "in the net" before they get their FAL issued or renewed.

Hope you understand better now, Barry.
