No to the death penalty

Posted By: Barry Morgan · 3/22/2013 6:31:00 PM

I don't know about you, but I was very surprised to hear that an Angus Reid poll finds 63% of Canadians are in favor of re-instating the death penalty.

Surprised and disappointed.

57 countries around the world still use this horrible practice. Most states in America also use capital punishment.

I understand the argument; 'What if someone you cared about was killed by someone? Don't they deserve to die?" That's a big part of the issue. Who decides who dies and who does not?

Another part of the problem for me is wrongfully executing someone. It's happened and more than once. How would you feel if you were on death row but innocent? How would you feel then?

And then there's the financial argument. Supporters of the death penalty say they don't want their taxes supporting a prisoner for the rest of their life.

But what about the cost of appeal after appeal after appeal?

The death penalty was abolished in Canada in the 1970's. And that's the way it should stay.

Sometimes I don't see eye-to-eye with Barry, but in this case, I agree 100 %. I would rather get taxed by supporting a prisoner for the rest of his life then live with the guilt of sending even one human being to their death, innocent or guilty. I see people freaking out when a pitbull ,who savagely mauls a baby to death, put to sleep. Yet those same people don't even wink when a person is is dealt the same judgement.

    Barbarism.

I disagree 1000%. There are very few people who I feel should be on death's row, but it sickens me that these inviduals are still alive after what they had done. These people were proven to be guilty and no amount of rehabilitation will make them normal. If any of these individuals killed someone I loved, knowing that they will live in a Canadian prison, aka "Club Fed", I would be tempted to seek out vigilante justice.

@Susan 1- "There are very few people who I feel should be on death's row" - Name at least two people in Canada who you think should be there.

2- "no amount of rehabilitation will make them normal" - Give us an example

3- "Club Fed" - You've obviously never been there...

4 - "I would be tempted to seek out vigilante justice" - There's a few people who are on death row for that reason.
