Help wanted; advice to quit smoking

On the show yesterday, I asked you, on behalf of a friend, for some advice on how to lose weight. Jill, not her real name, made a New Year's resolution to lose 50 pounds in 2014.

And a lot of you came through with a number of great suggestions and Jill was very appreciative. And that segment led a listener to contact me. John, not his real name, wants to quit smoking. But so far, no luck.

So John asked me to ask you for your advice.

If you were a smoker and managed to kick the habit, how did you accomplish that? Cold turkey? Some kind of medication? What worked for you?

    I quit in late November 2013,smoking for over 35 yrs.Almost pack & a half a day decided enough is enough.Quit cold turkey.husband quit at the same time he used the patch for 5 days and nothing after.
    I still have cravings but I fight it with regular chewing gum,beef jerky and walking.And yes I've put on weight but I intend to lose it before spring.

    The key to quitting smoking is not only patches to slowly wean you off nicotine, but overcoming or eliminating any urges. I smoked for 30 years and succeded in my first attempt..This is how I did it. Those strong urges will hit you anytime, I kept an old ashtray heaped full of old cigarette butts and everytime I got the urge, I would stick my nose close to the ashtray and take a big deep whiff, I gag today just thinking of it. After a few times the urges disappeared. Your subconscious has to be trained to think that smoking is disgusting and that has to be the best way. Good Luck!

    I smoked on and off for over 20 years, I tried cold turkey, I tried nicotine gum. I would always struggle and start again because of stress or social situations, I have to say the best approach I have ever come across and what helped me the most is Allen Carr's Easy Way To Stop Smoking book, and I'm not alone, I know several other people personally that truly benefited from it, I've been smoke-free for a year now and feeling great, no discomfort, I hope this helps, all the best!

    i have attempted multiple times , thousands to quit ! never successfull even lost my mother and sister to cancer and I still continued to smoke ! How crazy is that ? but thats how strong of a hold it had on me. finally i had enough New years eve i decided i dont want to die because of smoking related issues so i butted out and continue to not smoke ! this is my record ! once you get past the urges, the moodiness and the depression you realize you know what this can be done ! just dont give up , no matter how many times it takes one day it will stick ! i literrally had to lock myself inside this past weekend and not see anyone to get past it and it worked ! Never give up ! Go Go Go ! You know it can be done !

    After smoking for almost 40 yrs I had a heart attack a year and a half ago at 52 yrs old and had no choice but to quit. After 5 days in the hospital the nicotine was out of my system but the urge to smoke was still there. I read up on electric cigarettes and found out that one could make their own ejuice nicotine free. I bought one and I have never looked back. These days it is rarely used but it is there just in case. And just as a side note everyone in the house quit and we are all still cigarette free!!
