It will be my honour to again anchor CJAD's Remembrance Day coverage, starting at 10:45 Sunday and continuing until noon. We will pause to remember at 11 from the Montreal sevice at McGill University. I would encourage you to join us just inside the main gates of McGill if you can.

At 11 o'clock I will remember my father. He gave me wings. As a young high school kid, with a talent for playing the trumpet, he always volunteered my services at the local cenotaph to play The Last Post. I would bow my head and check my watch as the seconds of a full two minutes ticked away. A cool, crisp, silence spoiled only by the snap of the Legion’s flags or the chime of medals. Why McGill?

McGill University is pleased to become the permanent host for the Royal Canadian Legion’s official Montreal Remembrance Day. This year’s ceremony will again bring together veterans, dignitaries including, the Honourable Pierre Duchesne,Lieutenant Governor of Québec. The ceremony takes place on the playing fields just inside the main gates of the univesrity where soldiers marches and prepared for both World Wars.   McGill lost more than 600 men and women: 363 people from McGill perished in the First World War and another 298 lost their lives in the Second World War. McGill also made significant contributions to the medical care of wounded soldiers in both wars. Since then, members of the McGill community have helped resolve conflicts and maintain peace in Kosovo, Eritrea, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

The Memory Project

Created in 2001, The Memory Project is one of The Historica-Dominion Institute’s most successful educational programmes designed to connect veterans, serving soldiers, and students online and in classrooms across the country. The Memory Project Speakers' Bureau includes 2,000 volunteers from across Canada who visit classrooms and community groups to share their stories with youth.

Memory Project speakers represent a wide range of conflicts, including the Second World War, Korean War, Peacekeeping Operations and other Canadian Forces experiences. To date, these veteran and Canadian Forces volunteers have reached more than 1 million young people.

The Memory Project Speakers Bureau is a project of The Historica-Dominion Institute, the largest independent organization dedicated to Canadian history, identity and citizenship.

Operation Husky 2013

On July 10, 1943, as Operation Husky, the invasion of the island of Sicily unfolded, the men of the First Canadian Division sallied forth. The Division was made up on the First Brigade (the Royal Canadian Regiment, the 48thHighlanders of Canada and the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment), the Second Brigade (the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada), and the Third Brigade (the Royal 22e Regiment, the Carleton and York Regiment and the West Nova Scotia Highlanders). The infantry brigades were supported by the the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, the Second Field Regiment, and the Third Field Regiment, respectively. In addition, the Saskatoon Light Infantry (Machine Gun), 1st Anti-Tank Regiment, 2nd Light Anti-Tank Regiment and the 4th Reconnaissance Regiment (4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards).
