Tattoos are a part of our lives, even if we aren't inked

Posted By: Suzanne Desautels · 6/22/2012 3:31:00 PM

The first time my eldest child cut herself badly, I wept because I thought “my perfect baby is broken”.  Silly I know, but that is how moms feel.

Now I am struggling with another aspect...my children “breaking” themselves with tattoos.  Sure you can rant and rave and tell them how they are scarring themselves for life.  But it is very hard to fight the tide.  Let’s face it...tattoos are the fashion.   And as they will tell you...it is their body...not yours.

If my words have no impact...perhaps Steve’s will.  I received this email following our discussion on tattoos Friday afternoon.

"Hey Suzanne,

I have no kids but as a fashion photographer, I deal a lot with the low  twenties and teens. What i do is show them some of the things that were "fashionable" in the 80's, 70's etc .. going back about 50 years. A lot of time they giggle and laugh at the silliness of some of the things.

Then I explain how fashion changes every few years and what was once in  becomes horribly out. I have long hair which immediately identifies me as a child of the 60's  ... but I could cut it if I choose. Tatoos are permanent. They will very soon be out.

All things must pass.

Steve"

Thanks, Steve, Next time call! 514-790-0991. I would have liked everyone to hear your perspective.

I have been tattooed since I was 18. I had wanted to be tattooed since I was 13 years old. I spent those 5 years going over in my heart and soul the ink that would permanently adorn my body for the rest of my life.
I chose well and have never regretted one day since that first tattoo. I have many more tattoos and I am still not finished modifying myself. I choose to make these adornments no one else.
I have no problem with people not wanting or liking tattoos that is their business. I do have a problem with someone trying to tell me that I am making a mistake. I find this kind of attitude truly arrogant. I live by the Rede '' An' it harm none, Do what ye will". Well my body adornments have not harmed me so I can live with that. Weather others can or cannot is not my affair.

I don't think that tattoos are just "fashionably" they are art, they become a part of who you are.
Tattooing has been done for thousands of years, and they are still " In".

When I first got tattooed at 14 , which was a gift for my birthday by my dad, my mom told me the same thing " Tattoos are a fad."
Well 9 years later = 6 tattoos and I want more.

It's more or less a personal choice and who is to say what's fashionable or not.
