PHOTO: Inappropriate shot of a 17-year-old figure skater?

Posted By: CJAD 800 · 3/18/2013 12:01:00 PM

The Twitterverse is debating The Globe and Mail's front cover this morning. It's a shot of 17-year-old figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond doing a high-kick.

Many, including The Globe and Mail's public editor (ombudsman) Sylvia Stead say the photo is "inappropriate." What do you think? Does it cross a line or are critics unnecessarily sexualizing a young figure skater?

As for Kaetlyn herself, who finished eighth in an international competition on Sunday, she said this on Twitter this morning:

I really like that picture :p

UPDATE (March 19): The Globe's public editor wrote a full response to the controversy, explaining why her newspaper acted inappropriately.

So this picture is inappropriate? but it was totally cool for the people that saw this live. There have been literally hundreds of pictures of skaters doing tricks like this over the years. This whole debate is nonsense, completely unnecessary.

@Marsja I do not see what the fuss is all about. I had daughters in Figureskating, what we see is not a pose, but only a splitsecond snapshot during a performance...if this should be inapropriate, then the photo editor should not have published it

admittedly it's not the most flattering angle for the girl, but beyond that there's nothing wrong with the picture.

compared to some other figure skating costumes, she's actually pretty covered up

Sigmund Freud might have concluded sometimes a figure skater's high kick is just a figure skater's high kick. Perhaps some people who see red as the colour of passion focused too much on their own imagination.

I see nothing wrong with this photo. I'd suggest that for anyone who does, the problem is in their puritanical and, probably, hypocritical minds. It's not like she's skating nude or anything like that...come on folks, don't you have lives to live?

Definitely not appropriate...Who ever edited the picture and publish it should be fined..This is terrible.

No. Not inappropriate (in the western world). She's makin' the moves... It's all fair game.

since this was sport the picture is fine. that someone chose it out of many is neither here nor there as far as her performance at the event is concerned.

    cheers,
