Can this breathtaking NDG mural prevent graffiti?

Posted By: CJAD 800 · 10/9/2012 12:00:00 PM

This incredible mural was finished a few days ago and politicians hope that artistic works like this will help cut down on illegal and more unsightly graffiti.

City councillor Susan Clarke, who is in charge of the graffiti file in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, chats with Ric today about how to prevent vandalism.

Do you think the way to prevent ugly graffiti is having more pretty graffiti?

Thanks for asking. No, it will not stop graffiti. Check out the examples of murals at local parks provided in the blog at www.DefacingAmerica.com At best, these murals only move the graffiti writers to other surfaces. At worst, they are marked up as well by graffiti vandals. True graffiti prevention requires fostering attitudes among kids that recognize graffiti as harmful, not harmless. We don't have an art problem in our communities. We are suffering from vandalism.
