Change "takes a strong man." - Dragons' Den star Arlene Dickinson. Huh?!
One of the stars of Dragons' Den and The Big Decision joined Ric for a chat about entrepreneurship and women in the workforce today, and there was one moment that stopped Ric in his tracks.
Arlene Dickinson, the CEO of Venture Communications and one of Canada's most influential businesswomen, said something that may surprise many of her fans:
"Is there a class ceiling? I'm not so sure as much as it's someone who's willing to stand up and allow the change to happen inside an organization, and that takes a strong man."
Speaking to Mrs. Dickinson after the interview, she clarified her statement, saying that she was not implying that only "strong men" can make these decisions, but that powerful men in corporate Canada should use their influence to open doors for more women.
She felt bad if some misinterpreted her comments and wanted to clarify that. It didn't sound quite right, as I listened superficially, and indeed it didn't come out as planned - blame cold medication! She remains, of course, an advocate for the advancement of women in the workforce and just about the best role model a young woman could ask for.
