When Mary-Ann Kirkby was 10, her family up and moved – and not just down the street. Her parents pulled her and her 6 siblings out from their Hutterite colony near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba to start a new life.
And boy did they need to begin again – Hutterites are a cloistered community of Anabaptists, similar to the Amish and Mennonites.
The resulting transition was a shock.
Mary-Ann grew up to be a reporter, telling other peoples’ stories – and she soon chronicled her own life in the bestselling book I Am Hutterite: The Fascinating True Story of a Young Woman’s Journey to Reclaim Her Heritage.
Now – she’s written about the secret Hutterite way of life – from the culture, to the food to the polkadot kerchiefs that the women wear.
Her new book is Secrets of a Hutterite Kitchen - she joined Dave Fisher in studio.
