Some bicyclists actually text while riding their bikes. Does this make any sense? I don't think so.
We've been talking a lot lately about bike safety for good reason; too many accidents, some of them fatal.
Would those lives have been saved if there was a law requiring bike helmets? I don't know. But I do know that injuries and death can be prevented simply by wearing a helmet. It's not a cure-all solution, but it would be step in the right direction.
It's hard to believe anyone would hop on as bike these days without a helmet. But I see it everyday, even downtown.
And police in Montreal are concerned by the fact that a lot of bicyclists are either talking on their cellphones or even texting. You'd think there would be a law against this, but there isn't.
I simply don't get it.
If you can't text while driving, shouldn't there be a law against texting while cycling?
A committee has been mandated with making road safety recommendations and will submit a report in the fall. Here's hoping they make some common sense recommendations.
