An emotional, thought-provoking conversation with a friend of James Foley

The news of the horrific slaying of journalist James Foley has been making the rounds today, and the story is truly disturbing.

James Foley was abducted in Syria in 2012; yesterday he was beheaded by ISIS militants as a warning against further American interventions in the Middle East.

Today I spoke with his close friend and occasional collaborator, the documentary film-maker Matthew VanDyke.

This was definitely one of the most emotional interviews I've done in a long time, but Mr. VanDyke was able, despite this very difficult time in his life, to provide insight into the life of a heroic journalist who made the ultimate sacrifice.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of James Foley, and his friend Matthew VanDyke.
