Impact need the 12th Man at Fortress Saputo: Benzaza
Guest blogger Sofiane Benzaza, Founder/Editor of | Co-Animateur | Impact Blogger + Member of the CJAD Half-Time Show has his latest take on the team's latest loss:
The Montreal Impact could not get out of Guatemala City soon enough. Unfortunately, technical problems on the tarmac had the club leave Central America, almost 24 hours later.
The harsh 1-0 loss to CD Heredia was not the best outcome in CONCACAF Champions League. Even with a younger, less experienced squad, the Impact held off Heredia for 88 minutes thanks to Evan Bush. Unfortunately, one lapse in concentration was enough for CD Heredia to pounce on a mishandled shot by Bush and the rest is history.
Between the anger of not fielding a full squad and the dismay over the performance, fans of the #IMFC have shared different thoughts and emotions about the game.
First of all, Marco Schallibaum made the right decision to keep the core star players of the club home: Bernier, Mapp,Di Vaio, Nesta and Ferrari. If the Impact did not go through a slump, if there was not so much parity in MLS, one would expect a full squad making the trip to Guatemala. But the reality of the Impact is about making the MLS playoffs and let’s not kid ourselves, it is also about winning the MLS Cup.
Now that we have seen the depth of the club, there is a mixed feeling of fear and disarray. But, we can’t really evaluate the depth of the squad based on a few minutes in the Canadian Championship and the CCL. Depth is not just about having numbers on the bench. It’s about the quality of that depth and how effective it can be.
The bench players and the young Academy graduates can only do so much with little minutes. Take out the slump and the depth of the Impact would have seen more significant minutes.
Now the Impact needs to focus on Major League Soccer and the playoffs. With only 11 games left in the 2013 season, crunch time is upon Les Bleus of Montreal. Even if the Houston Dynamo has not done well at Stade Saputo, the rested core star players will need to do more of the heavy lifting for their teammates that made the CCL trip.
With the recent news of Schallibaum's 2-game suspension, crunch time will need to be led by Mauro Biello and the assistant coaches against Houston and the Philadelphia Union. Another leader will need to be the 20,000+ fans at Stade Saputo that have helped the team so much.
