Alexandre Despatie released an audio statement to the media this morning letting fans know he's recovering well from a concussion he suffered from hitting his head on a diving board while training in Spain last week.

The 27-year-old from Laval, was hospitalized and required surgery to close a 10-centimetre wound near his hairline.

“This morning is the first morning I woke up without a headache which is a positive sign.  I saw a plastic surgeon this morning for the wound which is also going very well. I should be able to get back in the pool by the end of next week.”

And although there was speculation that the injury had crushed his Olympic hopes, Despatie says as long as the recovery keeps at this pace, he will still represent Canada in London.

“My next big test is going to start back training, physically, and to see how I react to that.  But if things keep going the way they are, the team is very optimistic, so am I, and I just want to thank everyone for all the support”.
