Is this free speech? WARNING: RUDE PHOTO

It was a crass gesture, and she should never have posted it to Facebook... now Lindsey Stone is paying the price. A tourist from Plymouth, Mass. and her co-worker have been placed on unpaid leave from their jobs for posting a photo on Facebook that shows Stone 'flipping the bird' at Arlington Cemetery. Yes this was a terrible decision... but shouldn't she have the right to free speech?

I want to know what YOU think... keep the comments coming!

    I am of mixed minds about this issue. Part of me thinks....we've all made stupid mistakes, and done stupid things that does not equate an awful person who is deserving of losing his/her job.
    The other part of me thinks...if your judgement is this bad maybe you need a 'big' wake-up call. Respect was sorely lacking with this woman. I'll leave you with this poem:

    Respect your elders all if they deserve;
    Respect your servants too who you well serve;
    Respect your father for tilling the soil;
    Respect your mother for her love and toil.

    Respect all teachers who gave you knowledge;
    Respect your friend who saved you from the ledge;
    Respect all good minds who advised you good;
    Respect the man of God who gave soul’s food.

    Respect all strangers who were all Godsends;
    Respect your foes who taught you self-defense;
    Respect those evil men who you troubled;
    Respect the tempter who well you misled.

    Respect your conscience which tells you what’s right;
    Respect your God who is your Friend and Guide.

    Dr John Celes

    She deserved to get fired. No one limited her free speech when she did what she did, now she has to live with the consequences and a company has the right to not want to be affiliated with her in order to protect its brand.

      @Alex Meterissian YES, What a idiot! I agree...
      Disrespectful and rude not to say the least.
      I’m sure she wasn’t raised this way.... feel sorry for the parents.
      She deserves what she gets.... next time think with your head and not the FINGER!
      Unfortunately, Ignorance and stupidity will always exist.
      She should have at least dressed up for the occasion!

      @Alex Meterissian Actually, some people still don't understand what "free-speech" means. If I interpreted free-speech as she understands it, I would personally put up a giant sign in her front yard that reads DUMMY LIVES HERE.

    This act is not Freedom of Speech. She is simply a person who does things without thinking. The decision by her employer to suspend this woman and her friend from work without pay was not taken for this act alone but rather for their overall behavior at the work place.

    FOR SHAME to LINDSEY STONE and her ENTIRE family. This is pure example of what a vulgar, boorish, disrespectful being she is (notice I omitted the word human). If my parents were in her care, I would make certain that she was fired after this post on Facebook. SHAME ON YOU and SHAME ON YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY and all that call you a friend Lindsey STONE - your name says it all - you are made of STONE

    doing this at a cemetery . . . really ?!? . . . there's joking around, but honestly at a cemetery . . . however I must state if this was done by a comedian I'm not sure if there would've been such an outcry.

    I had a long comment prepared...instead, all I will say is FIRE her if you're her boss and have any morals and character. People have to know when to "draw-the-line".

      @Geo really? Fire her? Isn't that a little harsh? How about just talking to her and letting her know that what she did is just not right and that she should not do that again.

      I'm just glad you posted the short comment...that long one must have been real nasty!

    It's just another reminder of how the social media craze has created two types of followers; The ones who like to have fun using it and the others who just like to criticise those having fun. Shame on her for having fun and being stupid! It truly was in bad taste..But come on "folks" Stop being so critical and sensitive about an image that could have many other meanings! Besides..Why are we all prying on her personal life!

    It's not about freedom of speech anymore but rather about freedom of speech becoming "viral".

    I wonder if this photo was taken as a gag photo. If so, it's in very poor taste. The woman is obviously posing next to the sign, bent down to be level with it. I think she should spend 200 hours walking the cemetary with a stick in her mouth to prevent her from speaking, and wearing a signboard with a copy of this photo pasted to it, front and back. I used to pretend that "cameras were rolling" when I'd get into a confrontation at work. This helped me to remain calm and professional. These days it's a reality. CAMERAS ARE EVERYWHERE!! I think she deserves what she gets.
