Provincial police believe they've put an end to the largest debit card scam they've ever had to deal with.
Police arrested 16 people in early-morning raids in the Montreal area — including the suspected ringleader, 33-year-old Zobair Javad.
They say the sophisticated operation would tamper with debit card machines overseas, and steal customers' PIN numbers and information.
The ringleader, apparently, de-encrypted the information and sent the information out to people who would then clone the cards, and steal the money.
The scheme, police say, netted the crooks some 12 million dollars from more than 30,000 debit card users.
