The Montreal and Toronto Jewish communities have combined efforts to donate $100 000 to Colette Roy Laroche, the mayor of Lac Mégantic, to help rebuild their downtown core following the devastating train derailment on July 6, 2013.
The money was raised during a special relief program this summer where hundreds of personal donations were made online.
Dozens of community members traveled to Lac-Mégantic to visit the town and present the relief check including Susan Laxer, President of Federation CJA.
“When we heard what had happened our first response was this is something we want to help with, there must be such an immense need, it really resonated with us,”Laxer told CJAD.
The family of two of the people who traveled to deliver the check had founded Shier store, one of the first businesses in downtown Lac-Mégantic.
