Retired general and Senator Romeo Dallaire says recent sleepless nights caused him to nod off while behind the wheel today.

Dallaire crashed his car into a traffic barrier on Parliament Hill.

He says he has been unable to sleep -- even with medication -- since learning of three suicides of Canadian soldiers last week, coupled with the coming 20th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide.

Dallaire suffered debilitating psychological problems following his command of the ill-fated United Nations peacekeeping mission in Rwanda in 1994, where hundreds of thousand of people were slaughtered.
