One of Canada's richest men was honoured at a memorial service at Notre Dame basilica this afternoon.
Prime ministers eulogized Paul Desmarais as a visionary businessman, staunch Canadian and a good friend.
He was worth some $4.5-billion when he died, but speakers concentrated on his humanity and personal kindness.
Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney teared up as he paid his last respects to his friend, saying his achievements "will be remembered and revered by succeeding generations of Canadians as a model for them to replicate and respect."
Other speakers included Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Jean Chretien and former French president Nicholas Sarkozy.
