Snow has been piling up on the roads since it began falling at around 5 AM and Environment Canada is calling for a total of 10 centimeters.
The snow-covered roads in the downtown core made for slippery conditions during the morning rush hour causing a few minor accidents across the island and surrounding areas.
The city of Montreal says 1000 pieces of equipment and workers have been out since the snowfall began.
“Our priority is to make sure that the sidewalks and streets are safe, as well as access to the metro stations, hospitals and schools,” Jacques-Alain Lavallée, spokesperson with the city said.
“The forecast calls for icy rain this afternoon, so we are monitoring the weather closely and we will adjust our plan accordingly.”
Lavallée reminded Montrealers to take public transit when possible and to watch for snow removal equipment on sidewalks and when crossing the street.
Winter tires will be mandatory in all vehicles as of Sunday.
