UPDATED: Kirkland man dies in house fire

A man in his eighties was killed in an early morning fire on Marcel Meloche Street in Kirkland Wednesday.

The arson squad is investigating the cause of the fire but says it started in the bedroom of the single-family home.

Benoît Fleury, a fire department spokesman, said they were called at around 4 AM and once on the scene the house was engulfed in flames.

They found the sole occupant of the home unconscious and in cardiac arrest.  He was pronounced dead later in hospital.

Neighbours said the man and his wife raised their children in the home for over 50 years. His children currently live in Ottawa and his wife is in a West Island retirement home.

Eileen White, founding member of the West Island Black Community Association, said the couple were very involved in the community.
