UPDATE: Coroner releases report into Villanueva shooting death

The coroner's report into the shooting death of Fredy Villanueva recommends more training for police and a city action plan to deal with social exclusion and poverty in Montreal North.

More to come.

Villanueva was killed in 2008.

He was shot and killed by a Montreal Police officer in Henri Bourassa Park in Montreal North.

He, his brother and three friends were gambling.

When two police officers arrived on the scene, the situation escalated quickly.

Constable Jean-Loup Lapointe  says he pulled his weapon and fired because he feared for his life.

Villanueva was killed, two of his friends were wounded.

The family has since filed a lawsuit and has moved from Montreal.

Another waste of the publics money. They should have called for backup because they were going into a 2 vs.10 confrontation. What should have been investigated was and now has been filed under the proverbial police rug was that these officers were given a week to corroborate they're stories and not put on the hot seat right away.

5 years is 4.5 years too long to wait for a coroner's report. (The police delayed it as long as possible)
How can you have effective change if the Police officer has since been promoted and moved to a swat team since then?
We in Montreal are very poorly served by our SPVM police force and their union.
Overcharged taxpayers expect more from them than just an Impenetrable blue line.

I don't think that the world should change because gang members decided that evening to intimidate and attack the police. Why did his brother, Danny, run when he was told to stop? Why did they have a female officer in a head lock? There is no time to call back-up when being attacked. There were members of the bloods there and other gang members. They were illegally gambling. I hate to see anyone die, but if the cop felt that his life was being threatened, then I have to agree with his decision.

@ric These cops knew very well who they were approaching and before this action they should have called for back-up, so they had time to do this, and decided not to, so this could killing could have possibly been avoided.
