NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says he's open to having former Bloc Quebecois MP Maria Mourani on board.

Mourani publicly split from the sovereignist ranks on Wednesday, saying human rights are best defended within Canada.

Mulcair made his comments on CJAD's Tommy Schnurmacher Show, as a guest panelist on the Gang of Four.

He says Mourani's decision to renounce sovereignty is a good thing, and praises her as "a very strong politician" — but adds if Mourani wants to become a sitting NDP MP, she would have to earn her seat in the House.

"The NDP has a very strong principle against floor-crossing," Mulcair says. "Anybody who seeks to run for the NDP will have to first, become a member, and then run in an official capacity to become the candidate in an election."

Mulcair says he called Mourani after her announcement, and has left the door open to further discussions.

Good for him. Mourani seems a reasonable person, but I like that Mulcair is saying she would not be able to sit as an NDP MP without being elected as such.
