Sears subsidiary throws hundreds out of work

Just a few days before Christmas, hundreds of employees of a Sears subsidiary found out they'll be losing their jobs.

SHS Services Management told its employees that it is declaring bankruptcy, and shutting down operations immediately.

Employees of the company that does home services for Sears — like changing roofs or installing curtains and blinds — will get their vacation pay but no other compensation.

Court documents show SHS, nominally based in Calgary but operated out of Markham, Ont., was projected to lose $18.1 million in the year ending Jan. 31.
