Woman burned by laser treatment wins suit against clinic

A Montreal woman sued and was awarded $7,000 in damages after suffering severe burns following a laser hair removal session.

Back in 2010, Margarita Ioussoupova visited the Le Cherrier clinic in downtown Montreal for a procedure, but was left with some disfiguring marks on her stomach.

She noticed the burn marks on her stomach not long after.

She took the clinic — which has since closed — to court, and successfully argued the instrument used during the procedure was on the wrong setting.

Dr. Manish Khanna, Director or Dermatology-Oncology at the Jewish General Hospital and MUHC says laser therapy is safe, but you have to do your homework.

"You want to make sure the clinic has been around for some time, that there's good feedback about the clinic, and that they're dealing with a doctor who is at the clinic and is responsible for the treatments," he says.

Dr. Khanna says it's also advisable to select a doctor who is also readily available for consultations, in case something goes wrong.
