Remembering Edgar Bronfman Sr.

Montreal-born billionaire and former World Jewish Congress head was 84

Friends and family are remembering Edgar Bronfman Sr.

The Seagram company billionaire and longtime head of the World Jewish Congress died Saturday at the age 84.

During his time as the head of the World Jewish Congress from 1979 to 2007, he helped engage the fight to allow Jews to enigrate from the former Soviet Union and helped force Swiss banks return millions to Holocaust victims.

"If you pardon the Frank Sinatra analogy, he lived it his own way, he did things his way", said Jack Silverstone, former executive VP of the Canadian Jewish Congress.

Silverstone remembered Bronfman as a very passionate, energetic person, who used his wealth to give back to his community.

Silverstone added while Bronfman became a New Yorker decades ago, he was openly fond of his Montreal roots.
