The Sûreté du Québec have taken over the investigation of a fatal fall from a Côte-des-Neiges balcony earlier today.
Montreal police were negotiating with a man who had barricaded himself in an apartment at the intersection of Côte-des-Neiges and Ridgewood.
Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Audrey-Ann Bilodeau then says that he was suddenly falling off the seventh-floor balcony.
"When the officers of the Montreal police arrived, they had a quick [discussion] with the man. He barricaded himself after that in his apartment.
Police then tried to reach him through other apartments, but then he was seen falling from the balcony."
The spokesperson says that for now, police suspect the man fell accidentally.
"For the moment, the major hypothesis is an accidental fall. I know that it's kind of slippery here but we're not closing any doors. We're still meeting with some people and trying to make sure it's not a suicide."
When a person is injured or dies during a police operation, another force takes over the investigation.
