Babies born seconds apart a minute after midnight

Mila Aurora Matajic is officially the first baby born in Montreal in 2014.

The seven-pound, five-ounce girl was born to Melissa Thibodeau and Peter Matajic at the Jewish General hospital.

Thibodeau says the atmosphere on the hospital's fifth floor was almost party-like in the minutes leading up to her second daughter's birth.

"It wasn't something we were going for, it wasn't a goal," she said. "But it was fun nonetheless that we got to stake that claim."

Up the street at St. Mary's hospital, a girl was born a minute and 50 seconds after midnight.

Her name is Lydia Yara Salmi. She is doing well, just like her mother Aouatef Mokrani.

Ms. Mokrani and her husband, Sofiane Salmi, are residents of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension.
