Hydro-Quebec asking public to reduce power usage during cold snap

Hydro-Quebec is reaching record level energy consumption with this cold snap and is asking Quebecers to lower their usage during peak hours.

Energy demand is expected to reach 38 thousand megawatts by tomorrow and in order to ensure that it continues to provide service; Hydro-Quebec is asking for lower energy consumption today and tomorrow between 4-8 PM and 6-9 AM.

"We get this peak of a demand on the grid, it's not that we don't have enough energy, it's that we can't necessarily get it to people at the same time in those high amounts," Gary Sutherland, spokesperson for Hydro-Quebed said.

Quebeckers can reduce electricity consumption by lowering the thermostat temperature, postponing the use of major appliances and limiting the use of hot water.

Everytime we get these requests from Hydro, they just make me laugh. They tout themselves as the great producers of clean energy and then crumble when they are met with demand and environmental challenges. Well instead of giving away our energy at dirt cheap rates to the americans you should keep the energy to supply the taxpayers of Quebec who finance you and your overpaid employees.

Oh thats great we have to cutback so they can send it to the USA make money there then turn around and ask us for an annual rate increase. Great idea supply us with enough electricity then give them our leftover. At least we will get our money's worth instead of getting an increase in payment that goes along with a decrease in service.

I do my part by heating with wood. Does this mean that I can ask HQ to subsidize what I pay for a cord of wood?

    That's what I thought.
