The Montreal police force has set up a special team to deal with the homeless during this intense cold snap.

With windchills approaching minus-40, police were out in full force to help the homeless get into a warm place.

At the beginning of the winter, the force created special cold weather units in the Plateau, Ville-Marie and South-West boroughs dedicated to helping homeless people who are living outside in such cold weather.

Simon Delorme with Montreal Police says since Monday, officers in the three boroughs are helping the homeless, 24 hours day.

"There's police officer patrolling, searching and trying to refer people who may need help, to the different resources in Montreal," Delorme said. "We want to be sure that people who maybe not interested to call the emergency services or maybe not used to call them [...] have a warm place to stay during ths particularly rough time of the year."

The SPVM units also work with the STM and the Old Brewery Mission.
