A rescue operation was completed this morning in Antarctica, where a Russian research ship has been stuck in thick ice for nine days.

Fifty-two passengers expressed relief when they were flown by helicopter to an Australian icebreaker.

The chopper had to make several trips because it can only carry a dozen people at a time.

The Russian vessel's 22 crewmembers will remain aboard until the ice clears.
