It would seem that losing a bid for re-election or leaving a job as city councillor isn't an entirely negative experience.
A report says that 187 former municipal politicians will receive an eye-popping $ 5.5M in compensation packages.
That amount is bound to increase dramatically as well, since severance totals for councillors exiting Montreal's town hall will only be released at the end of January.
For the moment, the City of Laval is the most generous employer, dishing out over $ 1.5 M to 17 former councillors.
That amount is three times higher than second place Saint-Jerome, who will distribute nearly $ 500k to 12 former municipal politicians.
In response, the Marois government says it wants to take a closer look at laws legislating such compensation packages in the next few months.
