The upside of all this frigid weather and icy conditions

North Americans have been shivering and hating it for weeks now, but there could be a silver lining come spring.

Scientists say the deep freeze could end up killing some of the insect pests that have ravaged northern forests.

They say it could also slow the migration of invasive species, while heavy ice could prevent erosion and protect wetlands along large lakes.

As for Florida's citrus crops, the Florida Farm Bureau Federation says a well-timed cold snap lowers the acidity in oranges and sweetens them.
