The forecasts of a mild weekend are causing concerns about potential flooding along the Mille-Iles river and the Riviere des Prairies.
Laval police are in flood watch mode this weekend, as forecasts call for rain and temperatures well above freezing.
"There's slushy ice along both rivers, but if there is going to be flooding, it would be mainly along the Riviere des Prairies," says Nathalie Lorrain with Laval police. "That's unusual."
Lorrain adds the mild temperatures wouldn't be such a bad thing on their own, but they will be accompanied by rain, and that, she believes, will complicate matters.
"The effect of the melting of that slush which would free the rivers to flow better, that effect would be countered by the water that would be coming from the rain," Lorrain says, "so that's why we are a bit more preoccupied by the warm temperatures that are coming."
Lorrain says they will be watching the water levels closely this weekend. If need be, she says, they do have a supply of sandbags at the ready.
