UPDATE: Man killed in NDG fire

An early morning fire in an apartment building at the corner of St-Jacques St. and Old Orchard Ave. in NDG killed a man and left another woman fighting for her life.  Two other people with minor injuries are also in hospital.

The man in his forties died of severe burns and cardiac arrest in hospital.  The woman, around the same age, is in critical condition.

The fire department says the fire started on the second floor and quickly ravaged the three story building.  Someone on that floor called 911 around 4 AM Friday morning.

"We were all awake watching a movie, we saw smoke coming through the floor and evacuated the building.  Our main concern is with a friend of ours who took long to get out of the building,” one tenant told CJAD.

At least 40 people were forced out of their apartments and eight families are receiving aid from the Red Cross and Sun Youth.

Montreal’s arson squad will investigate the fire to determine the cause and whether the building had smoke detectors.

Damage to the building is still undetermined.

About 100 firefighters were on site and declared the blaze under control at around 7 AM.
