WATCH: Coderre to take a stand against homelessness

Denis Coderre says he has a soft spot for homeless people.

The Mayor was at the Accueil Bonneau shelter in order to serve food to street people.

During the event, Coderre said he takes the issue of homelessness very seriously, adding it's one of his main priorities for the next four years

He thinks the problem is three-pronged.

"First of all, we need a roof for everybody," the mayor said, adding that the city needs more social housing. "Then, in the Maslow pyramid, the top is self-esteem. So we have to provide all the tools so that a person can flourish.

The final point is the issue of mental health."

In order to put his money where his mouth is, Coderre announced that a portion of the upcoming municipal budget will be dedicated to improving the lot of the homeless. He will also approach the provincial and federal governments for additionnal funding.
