CDN/NDG residents to feel the pinch following tighter borough budget

Residents in Côte-des-Neiges/NDG will be feeling the pinch as the borough makes up a budget shortfall to help the central city balance its own books.

Parking meter rates will be going up by 50 cents an hour, from $1.50 to $2 on local streets and from $2 to $2.50 on main streets.

Opening hours will be reduced in the borough's four libraries: on Sundays and Mondays, residents will have access to one of two libraries in CDN and NDG. There will also be a decrease in the number of print documents.

Some good news: the borough says it won't be increasing its local tax and is keeping it at $0.05 for the coming year. It says with the recent increase in the property assessment, maintaining this tax will represent an increase of about $15 in 2014, $28 in 2015 and $42 in 2016 for a property evaluated at $466,500 following the increase in the assessment roll.

The borough's budget will total $73,577,800, a slight increase of 0.17% compared to the 2013 budget. The borough had to pony up an additional $2.8 million in order to present a balanced budget.
