One witness described the fire and explosion as something out of a movie.
Flames shot high up into the air, and the explosion was felt across the Decarie autoroute.
The fre began just after 10 pm at a construction site at the corner of Edouard Montpetit and Decarie.
Yvon Donest of the Montreal fire department said the explosions were caused by propane tanks left on site by workers who were using them to power portable heaters.
While the flames were spectacular, the entire incident was quickly brought under control by about 30 firefighters on the scene.
No casualties were reported.
Residents in nearby buildings were forced to leave their homes when the fire broke out but were allowed back in shortly after.
