WATCH: Video of homeless fight at Atwater metro raises concerns

Police have stepped up patrols in the area

A video is making rounds on the Internet showing a homeless man and woman beating another homeless man right in the Atwater metro station, as dozens of people walk by.

It's not clear when the video was taken, but it begins showing a shorter man cornering another, then kicking and pushing him.

He pushed him into a wooden barrier, the man then fell to the floor.

A woman came into the frame and stomped on the man's face.

The conflict has sparked the interest of Montreal police who say they are trying to locate the victim, to see if he wants to press charges.

Donna Varrica with Dawson College said west-end downtown has been going through tough times since the Old Forum closed its doors.

"It is a concern when you see any kind of violence," she said. "It's disturbing, you feel helpless and if you do want to help, you're sometimes over your head."

The incident took place feet away from the underground entrance to Dawson College.

Varrica, a spokesperson for Dawson, said she's noticed an increased police presence at the Atwater Metro - but there are still a high number of homeless people - many who are severely intoxicated.

Montreal police have special units in place to battle the issue in the area, with police officers patrolling on foot.

It's not clear who took the video, but towards the end, a man intervenes pushing off the assailants from beating the man on the ground.

So rather than alert the metro security, this guy sticks around to film the fight. Priorities need fixing.

This is nothing new. Atwater has been like this for over 10 years. It seems like there are no laws over by Atwater Metro.
I think this is the first time I've ever heard of it being reported though.

No one is helping or stopping these people and I don't think anyone ever will. They say there are special police units for that area, I've never seen them, not once. I've seen a lot of fights there that get settled by knockouts but I've never seen any police doing any good in that area.

The person who filmed this should be arrested as an accessory to the crime! Disgusting to film it instead of trying to stop it!

Instead of filming, the person should have used his phone to dial 911.

What else do you expect someone to do? You try to break up the fight yourself, you might end up getting injured (personally, I'm pretty sure I'd be big and sober enough to stop them, but still...) Call the cops? "Yes, there are 2 homeless people fighting at Atwater Metro..." I'd be honestly very surprised if they show up. Metro "security" probably wouldn't be any different.
Homelessness is a symptom of a larger problem. To those criticizing the videographer, you wouldn't even have known this happened had the person not taken the video. I think that the individual who took it, did a service by at least showing it to the public to expose the sort of things we ignore on a daily basis.
