UPDATE: Man shot and killed by police downtown

Montreal police shot a hammer-wielding man this morning just outside the city's main inter-city bus station on Berri St., between De Maisonneuve Blvd. and Ontario St. E.

He died of his injuries in hospital about two hours later.

Just after 11 a.m. this morning, several people phoned 9-1-1 to report an agitated man wandering on the street while holding what looked to be a hammer.

There are reports police asked for an officer with a taser to come to the area to try and subdue the man, but at least once shot was fired before that officer arrived.

It appears he is also known to police, and that officers had several run-ins with him in the last few days and weeks.

Why do cops carry tasers and not use them in a case where a hammer is involved?

@joeN Not all cops carry a taser. It's a good thing that an INNOCENT person didn't die.

This could have been handled with just the batons.
I know people who join the police force are usually not the smartest bunch, but it doesn't take a genius to quickly come up with a flanking maneuver... One cop in front of him distracting him before another cop knocks out his knees.

I really think that pointing a gun at anything that angers them and then pulling the trigger is the main part of their training.

There is absolutely no reason to shoot a person who is carrying a hammer. If a shot did need to be fired it didn't need to be a fatal wound. Certainly shooting the assailant in the arm would have sufficed. What an insult to mental health week. How many more times will this happen before one police officer is made an example of.?

@Sol Boxenbaum While I don't condone their actions in any way and wholeheartedly agree that a taser or batons would have sufficed, all cops are trained to shoot for center mass, which means the the chest. I know that some will use better judgment, but in the heat of a moment, they will revert to their training mentality. Absolutely not an excuse though, guns should never have been pulled in the first place.

@Sol Boxenbaum Unfortunately, marksman training is not mandatory for the Police. I'm sure some policeman do go to the shooting range once in a while but I doubt that that the average cop goes more than twice a year! On top of that I'm pretty sure they don't have moving target (exams) or regular shooting exams in which they would need a certain passing grade to even carry a gun.

I mean your dealing with people's lives and you can't even aim a gun properly!!!
