Coroner orders Magloire inquest

Quebec's chief coroner has ordered an inquest into the death of Alain Magloire, the mentally-ill man killed by Montreal police this week.

Magloire was shot several times by patrol officers who were responding to a call about a man smashing windows with a hammer.

Chief coroner Denis Marsolais says an inquest is necessary given that there have been several such deaths at the hands of police in recent years.

A start date for the inquest has not yet been set.

Enfin ! This is welcome news for Montrealers. Between the questionable judgement and behaviour of armed police, and the clearly lamentable provincial administration of mental healthcare (and healthcare in general) and budgets; the current situation requires immediate attention and amelioration before it all happens yet again.
