No one hurt in major downtown fire

Five-alarm blaze began in the basement and spread to other floors

Quite the fire downtown on Mackay near Rene-Levesque late Friday.

The major blaze erupted at a three-storey social housing complex and forced some 50 people out into the bone-chilling temperatures.

No one was injured and the cause isn't yet known.

"It started in the basement, but it spread to the 1st and 2nd floor" said Francis Leduc, fire department chief of operations.

The structure underwent multiple renovations.

The fire, which reached five alarms, led to a number of road closures in the area.
