The Surete du Quebec is going to step up the police protection for the three main political party leaders during the next election campaign.

La Presse reporting this morning, that the police force made the decision in light of the attack at the PQ victory rally at the Metropolis two years ago as well as rising tensions over the Charter of Values debate and  the growing number of threats in social media.

For the first time ever, the opposition leaders will have the same size police escort as the Premier.

Teams of 20 SQ officers, working in 24-hour cycles will be assigned to each leader, with six to ten officers by their side at all times.

When they they hold public events more uniformed and plainclothes officers will be present.

La Presse says one advantage of staging a winter campaign is the fact that most events will take place indoors and those situations are easier to plan for and control.
