Canada recalling ambassador from Moscow

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is strongly condemning Russia's military intervention in Ukraine and urging President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his troops.

In a statement issued after an emergency cabinet meeting, Harper says Canada is recalling its ambassador from Moscow and pulling out of the G8 process being chaired by Russia.

He warns that should Putin push forward with military action, it will lead to ``ongoing negative consequences'' for Canada-Russia relations.

The special cabinet meeting was called after Putin received permission Saturday to use the country's military in Ukraine, officially deploying troops in the strategic region of Crimea.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, meanwhile, is advising against travel to the region and says Canadians already there should consider leaving ``while it is safe to do so.''

Foreign Affairs says its advisory is due to ``political uncertainty'' and reports of armed groups operating in the area, along with protests and public clashes.

I imagine Putin is shaking in his boots after what Harper has said. The truth is that to Putin, Harper is a nobody and will ignore him.

Eh Harper you can't get things straight here in your own country and now you are telling Russia how to run their business? Show us how you'll put the seperatists of Quebec their place first before you go out and taunt a superpower. You are an embarassment !!!!

@markr What everyone seems to forget is that Ukraine is a member of NATO and if any country attacks any member of NATO then it is considered an attack on all members.

If he says nothing he is condemned and if says something he is condemned. Canada is voicing its concern. Read you history books how and why Germany attacked Poland. You will see a similarity.

It's fantastic and wonderful that Canada is concerned about what's going on there...but what about what's going on here ? Language and separatist crap in Quebec -again- not to mention the proposed charter affecting religious rights OR the change to have school history curriculum changed to reflect separatist views (there are CANADIANS in Quebec who would like the federal government to HELP and stand up for their rights as CANADIANS so thanks for not pointing out that those responsible in provincial government were voted in, not everyone voted for them) Nothing is being done to address the incredibly ridiculous prices for food and basic necessities in Northern communities either (check out Feeding My Family on facebook)
What about Canada taking care of Canadians HERE too once in a while ?
    Sad!

Usually when the UN get involved millions have died.
Civil war breaks out in the Ukraine....It's all over for Russia.

People don't want to get along.
Look at Quebec. What does it take for us to "love" each other?
    Sad world we live in.

I hope the Russian move works out. Putin will look like a hero, if he stops the civil war that look like was going to happen in the Ukraine.

We just have to look at Quebec...
