Coderre mulls extending opening hours

Montreal mayor Denis Coderre says he is considering a pilot project that would extend some bar opening hours to 6 am.

It's a measure that some bar owners have long pushed for, but not all of them are excited about the idea.

Advocates of extended opening hours argue that the measure avoids flooding the streets with rowdy drunks at 3 am.

Better, they say, to let them sober up a bit before they leave.

But some bar owners, particularly pub owners who open their establishments early, say the project could drive potential patrons to other establishments that offer longer hours.

The measure would not extend drinking hours - provincial law prohibits serving alcohol after 3 am.

It is not yet known where or when the pilot project will be implemented.

If they can't serve alcohol after 3am, where's the incentive for bars to stay open?

Can't make enough money selling coffee & water.

IF it does go through, how about extended Metro hours to get patrons home?
