Ukrainian flag flies above City Hall

The Ukrainian flag has been raised atop Montreal City Hall, and will remain there indefinitely.

"This is a symbolic gesture to show our solidarity towards our Ukrainian citizens, who fear for the safety of their families back home," said mayor Denis Coderre.

The ongoing crisis began last Thursday when the Russian army took control of several strategic sites in the Crimea peninsula in the south of Ukraine.

Over the weekend more than a hundred Montrealers demonstrated outside the Russian consulate on Du Musée Ave. to demand the withdrawal of Russian troops.
