Major repair work begins this weekend on metro's yellow line

Metro users may have to alter their weekend plans for the next few months — and for a few months after that.

The STM is carrying out major repairs to the ceilings along the metro's yellow line and will be closed on weekends beginning Saturday and lasting until May 25th.

Work will stop for the busy summer months but will resume September 13 and last until just before Christmas.

There will be three new bus routes pressed into service to try to make up for the inconvenience. They'll run between Longueuil, St. Helen's Island (Jean-Drapeau station), and downtown Montreal.

The STM is spending $10 million on the repairs, but the transit corporation says this is not an emergency situation.

"The safety of customers has never been at issue," says STM spokesperson Amélie Régis. "It is planned work, and the repairs are necessary, so that our infrastructures [remain] safe and reliable."

Régis says buses on the main Montreal to Longueuil route are expected to depart every three to five minutes. She adds the STM can adjust those schedules in the coming weeks to suit ridership needs.
