Will Montreal follow NY and ban caleches?

Montreal's SPCA is hoping this city will take its cue from the Big Apple and ban horse-drawn caleches.

New York's mayor wants the horse-drawn carriages that ply the streets around Central Park to be replaced by vintage-style electric cars. He says horses don't belong in city traffic.

Alanna Devine of the Montreal SPCA agrees and says caleches are bad for Montreal's international image. About five dozen horse-drawn carriages carry tourists around Old Montreal and the Port.

The Coderre Administration at Montreal City Hall says it is watching what is happening in New York but hasn't made any decisions.
