170 job losses at Montreal underwear manufactuer Canadelle

Canadelle, the Canadian division of American underwear manufacturer Hanes, will shut down its head office and distribution centre on Metropolitan Blvd. in St. Leonard.

170 people will lose their jobs — 100 at the Canadian head office and 70 others at the distribution centre — by the end of 2014.

It's a cost-cutting measure — most of the company's Canadian operations will be transferred to Winston-Salem, N.C., where Hanes' head office is.

The company sells underwear under the Hanes, Wonderbra and Champion brands, among others.
