Boyfriend fooled by phantom pregnancy

A South Shore man was devastated to discover this week that his girlfriend is not expecting quintuplets, as he'd believed for months.

It seems his girlfriend may have been suffering a phantom pregnancy. That is a condition, most often of psychological origin, where a woman becomes convinced that she is pregnant and may even exhibit physical symptoms such as morning sickness and weight gain.

35-year old Paul Servat says when his girlfriend's due date came and went, he finally insisted on taking her to hospital only to discover that she had not been undergoing regular ultrasounds as she'd said. She was, in fact, not pregnant.

She is now undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

Servat is promising to give back all the gifts the couple received after the quints story was covered by the local newspaper in St. Jean sur Richelieu on Montreal's South Shore.
